Founder + Chief Education Officer
Harlen Shangold, the Founder and Chief Education Officer of Ivy Island Educators, guides the strategic growth and day-to-day operations of the organization. He works with students, educators, and families to provide high-touch learning support and create collaborative, inclusive relationships that ensure quality programming and oversight.
Harlen earned his Master’s degree in Prevention Science & Practice at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After involving himself in the community as a passionate young educator, he began to reflect on his experiences of working privately for families during after-school hours as an in-home mentor, homework helper, and guidance figure for youth and families.
In recognizing the financial platform and privilege that many young educators lack early in their post-grad years, searching for initial employment opportunities, Harlen thought about all the other diverse, passionate educators who might never explore and impact communities in-need beyond their immediate geographic regions. He also saw the need for positive youth influencers in parts of Miami in which he had been working and beyond, especially for young people of color, and for boys of color in particular.
He wanted to create a stable platform for other individuals to do the same, to take a chance, and to follow his lead if they are so invested in positively impacting youth communities at a fundamental level. He wanted to afford them the opportunity to be able to grow as young adults in the economically demanding city that is Miami. So he created Ivy Island Educators - a mobile community of elite educators for multi-purpose, in-home and remote childcare services.
